Round 1 : Preliminary Application
Any applicant who meets the minimum qualifications described above may submit a preliminary application online. The preliminary application collects basic information about the applicant and authorizes our Division of Financial Aid to access electronic high school transcripts and standardized test scores. Applicants who did not complete a traditional program of study at a West Virginia public high school may be asked to submit additional documentation.
Current grade information and qualifying test scores must be receive before the December 31 deadline.
Round 2 : Second Round Application (by Invitation)
Qualified applicants who submitted a preliminary application will be invited to submit a more extensive application designed to provide the review committee with a better sense of the applicant’s academic accomplishments, involvement in extracurricular activities, and passion for pursuing a career as a public-school teacher. The review committee will score the formal application and additional documentation based on the Second Round Rubric. Information collected from this round will be used to select a small group of finalists.
Round 3 : Final Round
Finalists will be asked to submit a short (3-5 minute) video highlighting why they want to be a great West Virginia teacher. Video submissions will be reviewed based on the Final Round Rubric by an award committee. Up to 25 students will be selected as Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars.
