Underwood-Smith Teacher Loan Assistance

Receive up to $3,000 annually paid toward your federal student loans if you agree to teach mathematics, science, special education, elementary education, and counseling in West Virginia.

The Underwood-Smith Teacher Loan Assistance Program is for educators of mathematics, science, special education, elementary education, and counseling in areas of high need in West Virginia.

Eligible teachers and counselors must agree to work full time in a public school in West Virginia in a subject area and geographic area of critical need for two school years for each year loan assistance is received. Partial awards may be made to eligible recipients with less than a full school year contract.

Awards are up to $3,000 annually, are paid to the recipient’s federal educational loan servicer, and shall not exceed the recipient’s outstanding loan balance.

Eligibility for an award is limited to a teacher or counselor in a high need area in West Virginia. Download the map for the list of critical need subject areas and the geographic areas throughout the state in critical need for 2025-2026.
